Elizabeth “Betty” J, Nelson, passed away on October 3, 2022 at Wheatland Manor.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation where a visitation will be held one hour prior to her service. Burial will be at Lost Nation Cemetery.
Elizabeth Jane was born on November 12, 1930 in Rockford, Illinois to Ernest and Bertha (Reid) Steele. She graduated from East Rockford High School in 1948 and graduated from the University of Illinois College of Commerce and Business Administration in 1952, where she served as Treasurer of the Women’s Group System there. On July 20, 1952 she was united in marriage to David Nelson in Rockford, Illinois at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Betty worked in Chicago, Marshfield and Milwaukee, Wisconsin before she and her husband started farming in Rockford in March of 1955. They later moved to Atkinson, Illinois, then Tipton, Iowa and finally Lost Nation, Iowa where they made their home since 1976. While living in Tipton, Betty completed a Master’s Degree in School Counseling in 1973. She taught in Tipton, Oxford Junction, Lost Nation and Central Community School in DeWitt retiring in 1996.
She is survived by her husband David; four sons, Tim (Cathy) Nelson of Durant, Jim (Julie) Nelson of Garden Grove, California, Carl (Brenda) Nelson of Iowa City, Randy (Christy) Nelson of Rock Island, ten grandchildren; Josh, Alicia, Sam, Scott, Brett, Kristie, Acasia, Brandon, Bethany and Amanda, a great-grandson Alric Cross, two nephews; Bart Steele, Tom Nelson, two nieces Tiffany (Michael) Steele West and Wendy Nelson and a brother-in-law Don (Kathryn) Nelson of Illinois.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother Bob Steele.
