Frequently Asked Questions
Honoring Our Veterans: Common Questions
What military honors is my loved one entitled to receive?
Eligible veterans are entitled to an official Military Funeral Honors ceremony at no cost, which applies equally to both traditional burials and cremations. At minimum, the ceremony features the playing of Taps by a bugler or high-quality recording, followed by a uniformed detail of at least two Armed Forces members folding and presenting the U.S. flag to the primary next-of-kin. Our funeral home handles all logistics and coordinates directly with the military branches to arrange these honors.
What documents do I need to prove eligibility, and what if I can't find them?
Eligibility is verified using the veteran’s official military discharge papers, most commonly known as the DD Form 214. If you cannot locate this document, our funeral directors can immediately submit an expedited request to the National Personnel Records Center on your family's behalf to retrieve the necessary service records prior to the funeral.
Does the VA pay for the funeral, headstone, or burial plot?
While the Department of Veterans Affairs does not cover full funeral costs, they provide valuable benefits to help offset expenses. The VA furnishes a free government headstone, flat marker, or niche medallion for any cemetery worldwide, as well as an official burial flag presented at no charge. Additionally, depending on factors like service history, pension status, or cause of death, families may qualify for a monetary VA burial allowance, and our staff will handle filing all of these claim forms for you.
