Viola Hilda (Fuegen) Kilburg, 90, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 29, 2024 at her
home in Maquoketa surrounded by her loving family.
A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Dawson Funeral
Services in Maquoketa where a prayer service will be held at 3:00 pm. Her funeral mass will be
held on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, a
visitation will be held prior from 9:00-10:00 am. Burial will be held at St. John’s Catholic
Cemetery in Andrew.
She was born on March 11, 1934 in Clinton County, Iowa daughter of Leo and Josephine
(Banowetz) Fuegen. She attended school at St. Joseph’s Sugar Creek. She married Donald
Kilburg on November 8, 1955 at Sugar Creek. She worked at Clinton Engines and then farmed
with her husband north of Andrew until retiring in 1996 and moving to Maquoketa. She worked
in religious education as a teacher and coordinator for 25 years at St. John’s Catholic Church in
Andrew. Viola was also involved in church ministries and bible study at St. John’s and Sacred
Heart Church in Maquoketa. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Ct. 1156,
Jackson County Regional Health Center Auxiliary, Andrew Garden Club, and Jackson County
Master Gardeners. Viola would often be seen working in the flower bed at the fairgrounds or
tending to the flower planters on Main Street. She was a blood donor and Don and her
delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. In early retirement she worked at Tubbs Orchard,
Sunset Greenhouse, and RonAnn’s Garden Center. Viola enjoyed gardening, traveling, bowling,
quilting, dancing, playing cards, BINGO, and games with the grandkids. Don and Viola enjoyed
their daily walks in town.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years Don, and 4 children; Julie (David) Veach and
Kevin (Lois) Kilburg of Maquoketa Mike (Kathy) Kilburg of LaMotte, and Charlie Kilburg of Long
Grove; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her brother Duane (Pat) Fuegen of Charlotte;
her in-laws Mary Kilburg of Springbrook, Dave Sieverding, Judy Moran of Bellevue, Madonna
Fuegen of LaMotte, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her daughter Joni Kilburg; her grandson Ryan Kilburg; two sisters,
Katherine (Vern) Elsner and Bernice (Arlin) Kilburg; three brothers George Fuegen, Clarence
(Margaret) Fuegen, and Gerald (Shirley) Fuegen. In-laws Norma Sieverding, Leon Kilburg, Sr. Lou
Ann Kilburg.

Jackson County for your compassionate care of Viola
