Steven Roe “Tug Boat” Barner
Martelle, Iowa
Steven Roe Barner, also known as “Tug Boat,” passed away on August 27, 2025, at the Mechanicsville Nursing Home. He was born on October 18, 1941, in Martelle, Iowa, to George S. Barner and Gladys (Leinbaugh) Barner. Steven grew up in Martelle and graduated from Martelle High School. Over the years, he lived in several places, including a long stretch in California, working on a tugboat before returning to Iowa. Steven was a hardworking man who lived a colorful and adventurous life. He farmed, drove truck for Lou Somerville, Clark, and VanderHeiden, and even spent time working for the circus. On February 14, 2020, Steve was united in marriage to Carey Stewart. He enjoyed simple joys—stock car racing, a cold Pepsi, Western movies, and especially mowing the lawn.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Carey; three children, nieces and nephews, Bret (Carol) Barner, Bonita (Dan) Howes, Brenda (Eric) Brokens, and Bart (Laura) Barner; along with ten great-nieces and nephews and a great-great-niece &nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Creighton.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 24, 2025 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Dawson Funeral Services in Olin. Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.dawsonfuneral.com.
