Lester Powell Obituary

Lester Wayne Powell, born in Fall Branch, TN on May 8, 1932, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, in his home on the farm in rural Cascade, IA on July 23, 2021.

Lester served in the US Navy from 1952 until 1956. He received an Honorable Discharge from the US Naval Reserves in 1960. During his navy service he was stationed on the outpost island of Attu, Alaska. He served aboard the USS Oriskany during the Korean War. Following his military service, Lester was a realtor in the Cedar Rapids region. He married Carol May Achenbach of Mount Vernon, Iowa in 1961. In 1967, he and Carol moved to a farm in Cascade, Iowa where they have since resided. Lester had a zest for life. He was passionate about his love of family, his country, agriculture and raising cattle. He also loved a good meal and debating politics with family and friends. In later years, he enjoyed using conservation measures to enhance the prairies and wildlife habitat of the farm.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents W. Ernest and Hazel (Crawford) Powell and four brothers: Kuhn, Russ, Lynn and Morris Powell.

Surviving is his wife of 60 years Carol May Powell, Cascade, IA; three daughters Christine (David) Fortin, Darlington, WI, Ann Powell, Yardley, PA and Linda (Darin) Gilmore, Liberal, KS; three sisters Mrs. Clay (Wanell) Rodefer, Kingsport, TN, Mrs. Ruble (Carolyn) Jeffers, Franklin, TN and Mrs. Beatrice Hayes, Caldwell, ID; and 6 grandchildren Chelsea & John Fortin, Taylor Judge, and Justin (Elizabeth), Audrey & Carson Gilmore.

Calling hours are from 3:00-5:00 pm at Dawson Funeral Services in Wyoming, Iowa on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. A graveside service will be held at approximately 5:30 pm at the Stanwood Cemetery, Stanwood, IA.  Pallbearers are Dave & John Fortin, Darin & Carson Gilmore, Jeff Eggert and Richard Fishwild.  Honorary pallbearers are Bryant Hagadorn, Ray Moran, Kevin Muehlenkamp and Russel Streeper.
