John R. Gatts

John R. Gatts, 72, of Hale passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

His family has granted his wishes of cremation, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be at the Olin Cemetery.

John Randolph was born on August 6, 1951 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Mary Ann (Coltaux) Gatts. He graduated from Olin High School in 1972. On August 27, 1973 he was united in marriage to the love of his life Shelia Underdown in Arkansas. John worked as a carpenter in his earlier years and then worked as a Millwright Local Union 2158 for many years until retirement. He loved to socialize and spend time with his family and friends. He enjoyed riding his Harley. John enjoyed traveling with friends and family, one of his favorite places was Hawaii.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Shelia, two children; Brandy Gatts of Anamosa, Robert “Bob” (Azure) Gatts of Shueyville, three grandchildren; Jaden, Lochlan and Dillon, his grand dogs, a brother Kelly Gatts of Missouri, a brother-in-law Bill Dougan of Topeka, Kansas, sister-in-law Sammy Dillinger of Kansas City, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.

He Is preceded in death by his parents Mary and Robert Gatts, his mother and father-in-law Pearl and Arnold Underdown, sisters-in-law; Betty Dougan, Etsuko Dillinger and two brothers-in-law Tom and Don Dillinger.
