David Burmeister Obituary

David Lee Burmeister, 71, of Lost Nation, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on August 27, 2025.

Born on August 15, 1954, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Urbane and Beverly (Radke) Burmeister. He graduated from Lost Nation High School and later went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force, where he worked as a sergeant in nuclear weapons. His dedication and skill earned him multiple honors, including the Good Conduct Medal, National Service Award Medal as an expert marksman, the Outstanding Award with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Clusters. David worked for Clinton County for 31 years until retirement.

On September 18, 1999, David married the love of his life, Elizabeth Schocker, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Wheatland. Together, they built a life filled with laughter and love. His heart belonged to his son, Jonathan, and his pride doubled when his two granddaughters, Lillian and Isabelle, came along.

David lived a life of service—30 years with the Lost Nation Volunteer Fire Department, over 50 years in the American Legion (including 15 years as commander), and even four years on the city council. He cared deeply about his neighbors, his hometown, and anyone who needed a helping hand. David enjoyed helping out the local farmers in his spare time.

But David was more than his titles. He was the guy who could keep a crowd dancing as a DJ for over 30 years. He was the one laughing loudest at softball games, swapping stories around a campfire, or casting a line hoping for the “big one.” He was a Kansas City Chiefs diehard, an Iowa Hawkeye loyalist, and an old biker at heart—once riding with the Hooterville Marauders motorcycle crew. He loved winters in Arizona, bowling nights, and most of all, making memories with his family.

Those left to celebrate his life include his wife, Elizabeth; his son, Jonathan (Marleine) Burmeister of North Liberty; two granddaughters, Lillian and Isabelle; his sisters, Sally (Jim) Schroeder and Sue Burmeister; his brother, Robert (Bonnie) Burmeister; sister-in-law Barbara Burmeister, along with countless friends, neighbors, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tim.

David will be remembered as a man who lived large, laughed often, and loved with his whole heart. In his final moments, David was listening to Riding Out the Storm, the ‘last call’ song he always played as a DJ.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 from 3:00-6:00 pm at the Lost Nation American Legion. In memory of his love for the Hawkeyes and the Chiefs, the family invites you to wear casual attire, a team shirt, or bright, festive clothing to celebrate his life. A private graveside service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lost Nation.
