Carolyn Kay Mildred Gibbs, 83, of Monticello, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the
Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Dawson Funeral
Services in Olin. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Gabe
Robinson, Hope Baptist Church, Robins, officiating. Burial will be at Olin Cemetery. Memorials
are directed to Carol’s family.
Carol was born July 20, 1942, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Otho H. and Mildred (Cook)
McDonald. She graduated from Central City High School in 1960 and later attended
cosmetology school in Cedar Rapids in 1961. On June 18, 1961, she was united in marriage to
Lavern Marion Gibbs Sr. at the United Methodist Church in Central City. He preceded her in
death after 63 years of marriage.
Carol worked in nursing homes through the years and was also a homemaker. She enjoyed
creative memories scrapbooking, flower gardening, and especially yellow roses. Carolyn was a
member of Walford Community Church in Walford, Iowa.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, LaVern (Dawn) Gibbs Jr., Christopher
(Becky) Gibbs, Carl (Lisa) Gibbs, and Paul (Brenda) Gibbs; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-
grandchildren; and her sister, Sharon J. (Brice) Smith of Marion, and brother Steven A.
McDonald of Central City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lavern Marion Gibbs Sr.; and her
brother, Otho H. McDonald Jr..
