Shirley Jeanne Burns, 83, of Maquoketa died on Monday, November 3, 2014 at the Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa. Her family has honored her request and she has been cremated, burial will be at a later date in the Pence Cemetery in Baldwin, Iowa. Lahey Funeral and Cremation Service in Maquoketa is assisting the family. Shirley Goodenow was born on December 16, 1930 to her parents Paul and Martha (Horr) Goodenow, in Chicago, IL. She is the great-grand daughter of J.E. Goodenow, 'Father of Maquoketa'. Shirley married Charles David Burns on December 1, 1951 in Kirksville, MO. She worked in business offices of the Maquoketa Public Hospital for 38 years, and had assisted her mom with Hurstville Grocery and Tavern nights and weekends. Shirley was an active member of the Legion Auxiliary, VFW, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed her cat Blackie, playing cards, cooking, gardening and golfing. Those left to honor Shirley's memory include her husband, David Burns, her brother, Frank (Jane) Goodenow, a very close friend, Sandy (Steve) Dell, and nieces and nephews; Roy (Heather) Goodenow, Paula (Kerry) Johnson, Kenneth (Kimberly) Goodenow, and Heather (Jason) Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Darral Goodenow.
