Paul Hartel, 94 of Maquoketa, Iowa joined the Lord on Saturday, September 13th, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. His final resting place is at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa, Iowa. Paul was born in Berlin, Germany on June 28th, 1920 to parents Paul and Hedwig (Engel) Hartel. He married Arline S. Schonerstedt on February 10th, 1946 in Taylor, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII with the 534th Engineer Boat & Shore Regiment. He held a master's degree from Iowa State University. He taught Industrial Arts at Jefferson Junior High in Dubuque, Iowa until 1963 when his family moved to Maquoketa where he was the Guidance Counselor at the Junior High School, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion, American Counseling Association, Policeman's Association, Optimist Club, and the Eagle's Club. Paul also helped with the local police, did testing for the Iowa State Patrol, and gave community service where he could. Paul had a strong Christian faith and will now be serving with the Lord. He is survived by his adoptive son Carl (Betsy) Scott of Liscomb, Iowa, a grandson Chad (Kristen) Slater – Scott of Iowa City, Iowa, a granddaughter Kesha (Jay) Christie of Collins, Iowa, great granddaughters, Amber and Cassidy Slater – Scott, Clair Phantz, Brook Christie, Great Grandson Drew Christie and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Arline, and two half-brothers Joe and John Felton.
