Maxine O'Connell, 92, of Maquoketa passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at 3:45 a.m. at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa surrounded by her loving family.
Her funeral mass will be held on Thursday September 1 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be Wednesday August 31 at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa from 3:30-8:00 p.m. with the Catholic Daughters of America's Rosary at 3:30. Burial will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Garryowen.
Mary Maxine Henneberry was born on April 16, 1924 in Bernard, Iowa to Vincent and Catherine (Flanigan) Henneberry. She attended rural school in Butler Township, Jackson County. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1942 in Garryowen. She attended the University of Dubuque and received training to teach in a rural school. She taught for 8 years in Butler and Brandon township, Jackson County.
In 1973 she became active in education again and worked as a teacher associate at Cardinal School in Maquoketa for 21 years, retiring at the age of 70.
She was united in marriage to James J. O'Connell on June 15, 1949 in Garryowen, Iowa. They farmed in the Bernard and Otter Creek area for 34 years. In 1976 the family moved to Maquoketa, Iowa.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church where Maxine was active in helping with the Scrip program, choir, Spiritual Life Program and Rosary Society. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters, Mother's Club, Retired Teachers Association and an associate of Congregation of the Humility of Mary.
Maxine enjoyed baking, tending flowers, reading, music, dancing, and spending time with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children; Sharon Dunne of Dubuque, IA. Suzanne (Tom) Stecher of Peosta, IA., Mary O'Connell of Dubuque, IA., Vincent O'Connell, David O'Connell, Loras (Shelly) O'Connell, all of Maquoketa, IA., Sara (Loras) Huilman of Cedar Rapids, IA., Colleen Kafar of Dubuque, IA., 22 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, sisters; Joan (Dr. James) Cahill of Preston, Sr. Kathleen Henneberry, CHM, of Davenport, Joyce (Ray) Stratton of Peoria Ill. brother, Dick (Arlene) Henneberry of Cascade, sister in laws; Margie O'Connell, Loretta Shanahan, Rose Asbury, Rosie Henneberry, and Mary Jo Henneberry.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, in 1999 and a grandchild, Alicia O'Connell, daughter in law Karla O'Connell, her parents, brothers; John and Melvin Henneberry, sisters; Luella Henneberry, Doris Feeney and sister-in-laws Eleanor Slattery, Patsy O'Connell, Eileen Fassbinder, brother-in-laws; Pat and Edmund O'Connell, Paul Feeney, Francis Shanahan, Ray Asbury, and Charlie Slattery.
