Laverne J. Laffey, 86, of Maquoketa formerly of Onslow passed away peacefully at the Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue on Monday May 27, 2013, after a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00am at the Sacred Heart Church in Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before service time at the church. Lahey Funeral Services, Maquoketa is assisting the family. He was born on February 16, 1927 to Viola and Raymond Laffey in Bridgeport. He was raised on the family farm and went to the Bridgeport school. He loved to work the land and loved all farm animals. He could always get into a conversation about plowing fields with his team of horses and milking cows by hand. He married Marilyn Smith on November 5, 1955 and they adopted a son, Joseph on March 19,1959. Shortly after he got married, he left the farm to work at the Clinton Engines Corp., but he left that after a short time and went back to the family farm. He then rented the old Lester Kilburg farm in Springbrook and also the George Glahn farm in Otter Creek. He then sold out his farming operation and went to work for Bob Larkey and the Maquoketa Livestock Barn for twenty years. He then retired to a house in Onslow. When his wife Marilyn passed away on March 9, 2000, he sold the house in Onslow and moved to Maquoketa. Laverne was a very caring man who was an avid Bingo player, loved Euchre, and loved to go to Polka dances. He will be missed by all that knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Viola and Raymond, his sister Lois, nephew Randy Beck, and his wife Marilyn. He will be remembered by all that knew him and especially his son, Joseph.
