John Rickels, 84 passed away on February 1, 2016 at his home in Lost Nation. A funeral service to honor John's life will be held on Friday, February 5, at the Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation, at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation. Lahey Funeral Home will be assisting the family at this time. John was born on May 6, 1931 in Harrisonville Missouri to Harm John Rickels and Phoebe (Westphal) Rickels. He moved to Iowa in 1935. He attended school in Scotch Grove. He married Beverly (Hora) Rickels on February 19, 1963 in Iowa City. He was a member of The United States Air Force from 1952-1956, and is a Korean war vet. John farmed with his brothers and worked at Hansen's Implement in Calamus. He later worked at the Lost Nation School as a janitor and bus driver. He continued to help people in the community after retirement. John was a member of the American Legion #381 of Lost Nation. He enjoyed playing cards with his brothers and going to the boats. He especially loved to visit and chase the grandkids. John Is survived by his wife; Beverly, sons; Dale (Laurie) Rickels of Lost Nation, Mike (Angie) Rickels of Elwood, Greg (Jodi) Rickels of Wheatland, Sister; Agnes Milota of Maquoketa, Brothers; Herman Rickels, George "Don" Rickels, Carl Rickels all of Monmouth, seven grandchildren; Ryan, Michaela, Kinsey, Dylan, Garrett, Hunter, and Miranda, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Gladys, and brother Howard. Special Thanks given to Hospice of Jackson County and the American Legion 381 of Lost Nation.
