John R. Jones Sr., 98, of Maquoketa passed away on August 6, 2013 at Maquoketa Care Center.

Funeral services to celebrate his life will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa. Burial will be in Elvira Cemetery, Elvira, Iowa with military honors.

John Jones was born December 17, 1914 in Stockton, Illinois, son of John and Lillian (Hattendorf) Jones. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1932. He served in the United States Army WWII. John married Ruth Christiansen on January 1, 1953, she later died on August 26, 1991. He married Mabel McVay on February 20, 1993, she died on October 20, 2007.

John worked as a warehouse foreman, at Western Auto in Dubuque Clinton Engines in Maquoketa and at Lutheran Mutual and AFLAC as an Insurance Agent for 25 years. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, O'Connor Regenwether VFW Post #3633 and American Legion Post #75 of Maquoketa.

John liked woodworking, and liked to repair bicycles. He truly enjoyed his winters with friends in Arizona, but most of all he loved to spend time with family, and was proud of his granddaughters. He would draw cartoons on napkins, and was known for his "one liners." John knew no strangers and would talk to anyone.

He is survived by one daughter Barbara Jones of Dubuque, one son Jack Jones of Maquoketa, 3 granddaughters, and one sister Elizabeth (Russell) Haling of Hayward, Wi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both of his wives, and one brother Robert.
