James P. "Jim" Kirk, 82, of Maquoketa, died Monday, July 29, 2013 in his home surrounded by his family.

His Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. Family and friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, and one hour before service time on Saturday, where a Vigil Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m.. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Maquoketa.

Jim was born November 13, 1930, in rural LaMotte, Iowa to John and Edna (Hayes) Kirk. He was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Clasen on October 4, 1952 in Bellevue, Iowa.

Jim worked at Modern Motors in Maquoketa in early years and later was a co-owner of the DX Station with Jim Otting and of Kirk-Otting Motor Sales in Maquoketa for 29 years, and for Brad Deerey Motors. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8269, Timber City American Legion Post #75 and the Moose Lodge. Also he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council, Building and Grounds Committee, Sacred Heart School Board and the Men's Club. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was a past president of the Maquoketa High School Athletic Boosters and coached little league baseball and the Maquoketa Indians mens team. He was a member of the Lincoln Highway Car Club. Jim liked old cars, golfing, was an avid card player and Cubs fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family and supporting his children and grandchildren's many activities.

Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, nine children; Mary Jane (Carl) Zismer of Maquoketa, Teri (Tom) Taylor of Delmar, Nancy (Tom) Miller of Baldwin, Lori (Mike) Coleman of Shawnee, KS, Lisa (John) Heckmann of Asan, Guam, David Kirk of Morrison, IL, Tom Kirk, Robert (Melanie) Kirk, Scott (Denise) Kirk all of Maquoketa, 23 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, six sisters; Margaret Portz of Maquoketa, Carmelita Portz of Andrew, Rita Struble of Vallejo, CA, Ann Phillips of Dubuque, Mary (Nicholas) Wathier of Arvada, CO, Patricia (Clyde) Even of Bellevue, one brother Charles (Madonna) Kirk of Bellevue, and a sister-in-law Patricia Kirk of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Jeff Caven, one sister Dorothy Tralau five brothers; Delbert, Bertram, Francis, John J., and Loren "Toby", and a special family friend Bev Ryan.

His family would like to Thank Hospice of Jackson County, Wendt Center, and Dubuque Internal Medicine for their excellent care of Jim.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
