Charles David Burns, 90, of Maquoketa passed away on June 19, 2015 at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa.
A service celebrating Charles David and Shirley Burns will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Lahey Funeral Home. A private burial will be at a later date at Pence Cemetery in Baldwin.
Charles David Burns, son of Roy Wilkins and Osa Jane (Black) Burns, was born on August 24, 1924 in Downing, Missouri. He attended school in Downing. His parents moved to Maquoketa, Iowa his senior year, he remained with his sister Lavaughn until graduation. At that time he joined his family on a farm in the Esgate Community.
He served in the Army in the Normandy Invasion and the European Theatre. After the war he returned to Maquoketa and worked as a Plumber. He was married to Virginia Poole and had a daughter Julie Ann and a son Charles "Chuck" David II. He worked in Des Moines and then returned and married Shirley Goodenow on December 1, 1951 and worked at the Jackson County Hospital until retirement.
Charles is survived by a daughter Julie Ann (Paul) Null of Muscatine, Iowa, a son Charles Davie II (Janice) Burns of Broken Arrow, OK, three granddaughters, five great-grandchildren, a sister Beverly Aschbrenner of Moneta, VA, a sister-in-law Shirley Burns of Oxford, Iowa, many nieces and nephews, and special caregivers Steve (Sandy) Dell of Maquoketa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley, one sister Lavaughn (Lowell), four brothers Howard (Opal), Clarence Ray (Evelyn), Clark, Kenneth (Shirley), a brother-in-law Milan, and a niece Carolyn.
Memorials may be left in his honor to Hospice of Jackson County.
